Steel Mill Assemblies

The 300 Series austenitic stainless steels can handle the heat in mills and, given the ability to retain their physical properties without catching fire, they are the ideal alloy for many steel mill applications.

The frequent cycling of steel mill hoses such as caster cutoff torches also means flexibility is a key design requirement. Penflex’s P3 Series hose—available in both standard and compressed pitch for increased flexibility—is a lightweight hose requiring little force to bend, making it a preferred option in many configurations and spaces.

Penflex also offers a range of high-nickel alloys for extremely high temperature applications as well as superior resistance to corrosion.

Steelmaking Hoses and Expansion Joints for Steel Mills

Caster Cutoff Torches

Once molten metal is poured from ladle to tundish to mold and is then drawn into the casters that will set its shape, caster cutoff torches suspended from above move side to side to cut the now semi-solidified steel into desired lengths. These flame torches rely on flexible and heat-resistant hoses to deliver the necessary oxygen and fuel gas.

High Temperature Lubrication Lines

Steelmaking requires lubricants and lubrication lines that can handle extreme ambient temperatures. Well-oiled machines not only keep production on schedule, but also resist damage through wear and are less susceptible to corrosion. Beyond considerations around temperature, Penflex lubrication lines are designed with flexibility and high pressure ratings in mind.

Oxygen Lance Hoses

Clean and durable oxygen lance hoses play an important role in steelmaking. Delivering oxygen to a Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) allows temperatures to climb high enough to complete the conversion of molten pig iron into steel.

Penflex designs and manufacturers robust lance hoses with a heavy wall construction well suited to the constant handling—and frequent mishandling—these products see once in service. The development of a cleaning specification specifically for lance hoses demonstrates our commitment to this particular application.

Water Cooling Hoses

As ubiquitous as steel is in our everyday lives, so too is water in the steelmaking process. Steelmakers use water to cool steel, and the cooling rate impacts physical properties of the finished product. As such, water cooling hoses are an important part of hot rolling, casting and quenching processes.

Mills rely on water to cool furnaces and other pieces of machinery as well. Beyond cooling, they also use it to descale, wash, and condition. In short, water is everywhere. When it comes to moving water throughout a steel mill, there are two things to think about when selecting hoses: temperature and flexibility.

Penflex Product Support

Penflex Sales Engineers are always available to help define the requirements for your next project, replacement, or repair, whether or not that be for one of these common steel mill applications. In addition to engineering and design support, we offer resources to support proper installation and maintenance for longer life in service.
